The Nutcracker vendor displays his nutcracker ornaments in a woven basket to delight holiday shoppers. Nutcrackers are believed to have originated in the Erzgebirge region of Germany about 300 years ago. An artisan carved a wooden soldier with a movable mouth to symbolically crack the "hard nut" of the economic times. The figure quickly became popular throughout the region, Germany and the world. Each Caroler is meticulously handcrafted by the Byers Choice artisans and is adorned in a variety of winter clothing from past eras.
