This full 360° panoramic photograph depicts the site of one of the most important events in United States history, the defense of Little Round Top by the Army of the Potomac on Second Day of the Battle of Gettysburg, July 2, 1863. Earlier, Confederate forces commanded by General James Longstreet had broken the line of the Union 3rd Corps and were moving relentlessly toward the heights of the rocky hill to the east. Union General Governor Warrren, recognizing the importance of the hill, ordered it defended. In time to accept the Confederate assault, the brigade of Colonel Strong Vincent occupied its western and southern slopes . The far left of Vincent's line was held by The 20th Maine. The 15th Alabama, the far right of The Army of Northern Virginia, attempted to turn it. The 20th Maine repulsed a series charges and in a dramatic counter-attack routed the Alabamians.
